Hair dilemma - honest opinions welcomed!

** IRONIC UPDATE 23/01/14: My hair appointment was cancelled this evening...I now have to wait a whole week until my next available one!!! Thank you all so much for sharing your honest
opinions though! I hope I don't spend the next week procrastinating! **

Friends, I think I often give my poor boyfriend a bad reputation on here! Although it's humorous to share his amusing comments about my makes and whatnot, I must admit that he's incredibly kind and way more likely to compromise (especially on home decorating matters) than I am. He's also extremely easy to please, complimentary and supportive in terms of how I dress, my make-up, and usually, my hair.

But there's one major sticking point between us...my fringe (bangs)! Since I had it cut really short last July, he has been very vocal about how much he dislikes it. He tells me it's too harsh and that a side fringe is much prettier on me. And, to be fair, he's not the only one to say this. Which is a great shame, because I really love it and I'm not sure I'm quite done with it yet.

I've been strong at sticking to my guns for six months, and although I try not to let other people's opinions sway me in life, I'm actually not sure what to ask for at my overdue hair appointment on Thursday.

So I'm curious, what do you think suits me best - short or side fringe? Please be honest, friends and family have been so you won't offend me!

Opinion seems divided so far, but I'd love to know if there's a general consensus...although I can't promise it will change my mind either way!

  1. I really love the straight across bangs (picture on the left in the BHL Anna dress). BUT, the side swept bangs also look good on you.

  2. Honestly, I think you completely rock both looks. If I had to choose, I'd be Team Sideswept, but you look lovely with both.

  3. It doesn't matter what anyone else thinks! If you like the straight bangs, wear the straight bangs. Because eventually you'll get tired of them and wear them differently. And then some people will like that better, and some won't. But whatever. It's your hair, have fun with it. It's just hair. It's not forever!

  5. Both look great. I really like the straight across a lot, though I may be biased because MY bangs that I had cut a few months ago are straight across. Maybe keep the straight across but grow them just a smidge longer so you can sweep them to the side if you ever feel like it?

  6. Hi,

Please don't take this the wrong way. I've read your blog for a long time but I don't think I have ever commented. I do understand how hard it is to be objective about something like your hair and admire your bravery in asking for views from complete strangers (who are potentially very mean). So I'll give you the thoughts of a very opinionated stranger.

While I am a big supporter of short fringes, I agree that the side-swept fringe seems to suit you best. Looking at your pictures, the one on the left reminds me of early greek sculpture, and they are absolutely beautiful but also a little bit harsh. In the one on the right you look like you wouldn't be out of place talking to Simone de Beauvoir and Jean-Paul Sartre at a parisian café*. I would go for the second one because existentialism rules.

*disclaimer: your geometric dress (or top) is also totally amazing and may have swayed my opinion somewhat.

    Does that help?

  10. I think both look good on you. Both fringes pictured are quite short. Perhaps in the spirit of compromise you could maintain the fairly straight fringe you have now, but maybe a bit longer and sideswept. I think that would look great and perhaps have a softer overall effect. Just thinking out loud. Good luck with whatever you choose.

  14. Hi- I had to come out of the woodwork to comment. I also have bangs and though they are longer, I debate them (in my mind) all the time so I know how you feel! I'm always trying to find the perfect length.. I think they both look nice. It depends what sort of look you're going after. The straight across is more of a 'look' and definitely more of a retro feel. The sideswept is more of a looser, relaxed feel - especially if you decide to go a little longer. Bangs grow so fast (except when you want to completely grow them out) that if you do the sideswept thing you can go back to short with a couple snips!

Maybe if you wanted to try something different you could grow them out a bit, that way, if you kept them straight across there would be enough length to push them to the side when you want to rock a side fringe.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I agree that both look great on you. The side swept bangs are a softer look, but I wouldn't call the straight across ones "harsh," just "stronger." If you like the straight across ones, that's what you should get!

  31. You are a truly naturally beautiful young woman with such a gorgeous complexion! I have an 18 year old daughter who loves short bangs also, and I like them on her, for the record. Looking at your features, they are quite strong. Although I do like your short, straight bangs, they present a stronger look. The side bang or fringe softens your look and is very pretty, perhaps more feminine. In the end, as you already know, the choice is yours. You are gorgeous both ways.

    1. Thanks for your honesty! If I keep the fringe either way, it will definitely have to sit above my eyebrows! Any longer drives me insane and hides too much of my face I feel...

  34. Side swept...no denying you rock them.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I agree with Mary--you look great with both styles, but I like the side swept bangs. I have really curly hair, so I can't wear bangs. I would go batty trying to style/straighten my hair so I could wear bangs. So, I advise wearing what style take the least effort!

  36. I love both on you as well ... not sure I can help but I can tell you I have had pretty much the same conversation with my husband, more than once. :) I go back an forth between the styles, so we are both happy some of the time. He says he "gets" that the short blunt bangs are retro, but he still likes longer, side-swept bangs on me. I think he sees side-swept bangs are more feminine. I'll be honest and say that on me I like short blunt bangs because they don't get in my eyes and I can "fix" them without a mirror, not for any particular aesthetic reason.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Well yes, longer bangs are less orderly and irritate the hell out of me...I don't like them touching my eyebrows. I reckon my boyfriend probably likes the sideswept look more for the same reason as your hubby!

  47. Well, numero uno, allow me to reiterate what one of my favourite people wrote back in 2006, that you don't owe anyone pretty: http://www.dressaday.com/2006/10/20/you-dont-have-to-be-pretty/

There's no law saying that you need to please the eye of everyone around you. The nose, yes, perhaps. An unwritten but solid one. The eye, not so much (as long as you're dressed. There's a law if you're not, n.b.).

Look with fringe (as we say in Anglo) is a definite Look. I can see why you're not done with it. It has a certain attitude that perhaps wants to be explored? The one on the right is classy but more retiring, easier to hide. Left says arty with opinions and would no matter what the rest of you is wearing, right could work with a corporate suit and give nothing away. Go with your guts, I say.

  53. It's a real shame you can't have both, each a different look for a different occasion. I'd side with your boyfriend if I had to pick a side, partly because I think the sideswept look comes across more natural, but then I think the straight fringe looks very stylish.

You'll obviously be swayed by all the comments on here, but you really need to take them into account, but go with your instinct. Your hair doesn't just need to look good, it needs to speak about you and who you are. You can always change it later.

  54. Haha just tweeted to go short and THEN read this but if I may, as an old married lady of 8 years hehe- I have fiund that a relationship like this often means compromise & not in a negative way! Taking decisions based on my loved one's likes displays love to them and when we're both "compromising" like that it creates an atmosphere of mutuality, of respect, of love shared and security. Yes-even with a haircut!! Little things count. And hair grows back & can be recut. That's my observation anyhoo! Go forth & enjoy your time at the hairdresser!! I love your style!!!

I like my bangs blunt, he likes them side swept. But he knows in the end that I'm going to do what I like and he's totally fine with that but he just likes to make his opinion known. lol. When I'm indecisive about my fringe I have my hairstylist cut it so I can wear it both ways, straight or on the side. In the end it's your hair and you have be with it every day 24/7. 67. I really love the straight bangs but I am biased because I too have straight bangs! I tend to like "sharp angles" on things as well as contrast. I too have been told that certain looks on me are "harsh" such as angled cuts with dark hair, straight bangs.

I think ultimately, do what YOU like - not anyone else. I have done things in the past to please others with my look and I have always regretted it. You'll know what's right for you and when. :)

  68. I like non-symetrical things, it makes movement, so it's just my opinion and I prefer the side fringe. 70. I had the same problem a couple years ago. I had my fringe cut really short, and the BF didn't like it one bit... I went back and had the same fringe cut a few months later, just to show how much I value his opinion when it comes to my hair...
Now on to your hair... I really really like the straight fringe at this length, I don't think it should be any shorter (maybe even a bit longer). The sideswept fringe isn't bad but I feel like it is a bit to short on the right side of the picture (the left side of your head) so I would advise you to let the fringe grow a bit longer, and if you're not done with the bangs, you can go back later and have it cut to the length you have now. But if I have to choose one, I say straight! Good luck on the decision making!

  72. I love full fringes, and I'd never thought they were harsh before - I would have thought they softened the face. I think I agree with the other people who said full fringe, but maybe a tiny bit longer, so it can be more easily pushed to the side on days you want to push it to the side. But if I had to pick one, straight across fringe for me!

    ReplyDelete
  73. Oh my! You are braver than me asking for opinions. I too have a short blunt cut fringe, I like it, I'm guessing some people don't, but I don't care. As you say further up, it is just hair, it grows..and sometimes falls out (a summer of whacky colours and I've had to lose a significant amount off the length of mine recently!).

  74. I love the short fringe! But you don't have to listen to anyone, you should do with your hair what you like best! It doesn't matter what anyone else thinks! There will always be people who love your current haircut, and people who don't. Hair grows, you can change it all the time!

    ReplyDelete

    1. Yep, we can please everyone as taste is so subjective! Thanks so much for the comment!

  75. Hi! I don't believe I've ever commented on your blog before, despite the fact I've been reading it for quite some time now.

Anyway, I think that the brilliant thing with hair is that it is so changeable. It will grow out again when you cut it, you can re-dye it if you get bored with your colour or you decide it didn't fit you after all. You can pretty it up with all sorts of stuff, or just leave it hanging. There's so many possibilities and options, and what's even more great about it, is that one can try it all!

So, I'll say this about your fringe, in my opinion I think your fringe is too short for your frame, and as other has said before me; it'll make you look a bit harsh - but maybe even more so with the bright red lips you wear too, (it looks to me on the photograph that the red lipstick is a cold colour, all of these things affect each other you know, colour and shapes :P ) I think you look softer with the side fringe, but...

ultimately girl, what I think, and what everyone elses think really doesn't matter. It's what YOU think, and how YOU feel about your hair that matters. If you like your fringe short and straight, go for it, if you want a change - go for that. You are gorgeous either way.

    1. You make some really interesting points Lise, thanks so much for taking the time to comment! I'm addicted to the red lips I'm afraid...I'd rather sacrifice the fringe then that ;o)

  76. I love both. Sorry, I know that's not helpful. I think the short fringe is more "fashion forward", which is something blokes don't often understand. Quite often a side swept fringe is softer and so more flattering, and more "pretty". I guess, do you want to be "pretty" or "fashion forward" (to be clear, you look attractive - sorry if that sounds weird - either way!). It also depends on how much you are willing to put up with the negative comments. I'm not sure I could wear my hair in a style my husband didn't like, and I am pretty stubborn!

    1. My boyfriend said his piece and he won't keep going on, so I don't have to put up with any negative comments really. And I think that ultimately I like the shorter one as it's 'edgier' or as you put it, fashion forward!

  77. The straight across version is much more striking. You look more "vintage" and remind me of a china doll :) If you want to have a strong look - that's the one! But if you want to be more "normal" the side parting is the way to go. And that is not a decision for your male appendage to make on your behalf ;)

    1. Aaaw, thanks Roo...I don't mind being likened to a china doll one bit ;p Not sure I'm ready to be 'normal' yet...haha!

  78. You look lovely either way but I am partial to straight across bangs. They suit your vintage style.

  79. I like the short bangs, I've always wished I could pull that off, and I associate it with pinup girls and all, so I guess my opinion really only matters if you want to be retro sexy!

  80. Hi Marie,
Out of the 2 photos you've shown I prefer the side fringe, it's a softer look, less rigid and strict, but I I like the straight fringe when the rest of your hair's a bit wavy!

    1. Thanks for your thoughtful reply! I must say, I prefer my hair wavy in general too!

  81. you're one hot piece of coal with a side or a short but I do love the short as previously documented I think you're a rock chick supremo and I bow down at those beautiful rock and roll bangs xxx

  82. You're a babe either way! I can never decide what I want to do with my bangs, so usually my stylist will cut them so they can be worn either way (to the side or straight). Remember when we were on the tube and I said "bangs" and you girls laughed at me? haha :)

  83. Marie, I think BOTH looks work really well on you! I'd love to try a blunt fringe but I know that I'll just look terrible and so prefer to stick with a side fringe. Also, my fine hair doesn't really seem to like fringes but my round face suits them. Ahhh, so many dilemmas!

  84. You're so pretty you'd look great bald! I personally prefer the blunt bangs in the left picture. I feel like they look more youthful. But the sideswept is nice too!

    1. Ehehehe, you made me laugh out loud Rosie! I honestly think I'd look scary bald, but let's hope I don't ever have to find out ;o)

  85. I like both looks on you! My husband feels the same way about bangs, though-- he always laughs at mine and greatly prefers sideswept to straight across. I don't really like seeing my forehead, though, so I prefer to wear them straight. I wonder how the blunt bangs would look if they were blended in a bit at the sides, sort of layering around your face a bit to frame it. Luckily they grow so very fast that if you change your mind one way or another, you can change them up quickly! I know you'll look cute no matter what you do, but I'm excited to see a pic of your new 'do!

    1. What?!? Why are you hating on your forehead missus?!? I'm sure it's absolutely beautiful, just like the rest of you!

  86. I may be late to the game, but I like the straight one better. It's true that the side fringe is more trendy and trendy people would go for that one, but I like the other one better. It looks beautiful on you and if you like it, go for it. It's your face and your bangs. I also have a short straight fringe and I understand your point. Sometimes it's like swimming against the current, but you have to make a statement if you're sure of it.

  88. Both are very becoming. When worn straight, I like the most recent pics best!
