Mad Men style files #1 - Faye Miller

There's been a fair bit of sewing, knitting and crochet-learning going on in these parts, but I don't actually have anything finished to show you all yet! Ironically, March will end up being my most productive month of the year so far as I'm frantically sewing up enough Renfrews for Tilly's exciting One Week, One Pattern project and I'm also hoping to complete a Mad Men inspired dress for Julia Bobbin's awesome challenge.

In keeping with the Mad Men fever that's surmounted stitchers around the world, over the next few weeks I've decided to regale you with some style inspiration (basically my favourite looks) from the wonderful series – starting with some secondary characters and moving on to the better known ones. If I start clogging up your blog-readers and you'd rather I didn't continue with this style series, please do let me know!

I've already decided to make Jane Siegel/Sterling's dress for myself, but one of my absolute favourite style icons from the Mad Men series is Faye Miller. She stole my heart with her lovely hair, warm brown eyes, perfect make-up and elegant outfits. I also love that she's a successful professional and an independent woman!

Here are some of my favourite Faye Miller looks
(all photos taken from Tom + Lorenzo blog)

Faye has the best selection of work blouses with lovely neck detailing

She's also got a great array of twin-sets

And Faye's elegant work and evening dresses need to make their way into my wardrobe soon!

If you've been sitting on the fence about Julia's Mad Men Dress Challenge, has this post given you any food for thought? I sure hope so!

What are you working on at the moment?

  1. I'm currently struggling to reduce the size on
    the Colette Violet blouse.
I may set that aside so I can get started on my Mad Men dress. I posted about some styles I was considering, but then found another I hadn't blogged about and fell in love. I just bought the fabric last week! I'll be doing the polka dot party dress that Betty wore in Season 2! http://www.tomandlorenzo.com/2010/07/mad-style-betty-draper-s2-part-2-2.html

The Jane outfit had also caught my eye, the top looks like the Colette Jasmine blouse.

  2. I'm doing the Mad Men dress challenge too and now that I've decided what I'm doing and the fabric I'm using I really need to get on it!

I've only watched a couple episodes so I haven't seen this character but I'm really liking the outfits you've shared here!!!

    1. Yes, I need to get on it too! I've cut out parts of my dress, but should really start sewing as things don't always go smoothly ;o)

  3. Marie I'm so happy you're doing a little style-bio on Faye! She's incredible and totally under-loved. Hopefully I get a pattern in time to play for the challenge, but this is definitely inspiring! Please don't stop the mad man love... RL x

    1. Glad to hear that you'll be enjoying the Mad Men love and I'm so pleased you like Faye too. She's definitely under-loved, so I hope this post does her a little justice!

I also hope you get to take part in the challenge - I think you'd look great in a little wiggle dress!

  4. I love the green scoop necked dress in particular. It's a close call but I think Trudy may be my favourite Mad Men style icon! Bring on the new series :)

    1. I love that one too! And Trudy is one of my favourite style icons too, so when it came to choosing my own dress, I was surpised by what I picked in the end. Though I guess the patterns in my stash dictated part of that decision!

  5. Great post keep em coming- can't get enough mad men style, and good character choice too. I think I've got a pattern very much like that red suit, Scallops round collarless neck and all! Wish I had the green fowl neck dress pattern....

    1. Thanks, hope you won't regret saying that ;o) I'll space them out as much as I can over the next few weeks. The green frock is gorgeous isn't it? I'm sure I've seen similar patterns on Etsy...

  7. Hey Marie! I couldn't find an email address on your blog, so I'll write to you here. Thank you for your great Felt Rose tutorials!! I used it for a workshop I gave and it was really really perfect. Your instructions were really clear and well-made.
